Analyst Says Democratic Sweep Puts Xbox Closer to Sale - briefly|
| (hx) 06:22 PM CET - Nov,06 2026 | A gaming industry analyst says Microsoft’s Xbox division is closer than ever to being sold after Democrats took control of both chambers of Congress.
Joost van Dreunen, a professor at NYU Stern and former SuperData founder, made the argument in a Substack post titled “The election that could break up Xbox.” He points to voter pushback against data centers and new local restrictions that could raise the cost of Microsoft’s AI infrastructure spending.
Xbox has already seen studio closures and layoffs while its revenue continues to decline. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s Search and Advertising business grew 10 percent this year. Van Dreunen suggests the gaming unit could become a target for cost-cutting.
Reports from The Information said private equity buyers previously explored an Xbox acquisition at a $100–150 billion valuation. Microsoft has stated that Xbox is not for sale. The analyst’s view remains speculation, not a confirmed plan.
