Google to Kill Search in Schools That Reject Its AI - briefly
(hx) 07:58 PM CET - Nov,03 2026
Google announced on Tuesday that starting in early 2027, AI tools for K-12 student accounts will be turned off by default.

School administrators must explicitly enable Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom, and Google Search if they want students to use them.

Schools that keep AI disabled will lose access to Google Search entirely. Chris Phillips, Google’s vice president of education, told The New York Times that "Search and AI are deeply integrated," so there is no option to keep traditional Search while blocking AI features.

Students at schools that block AI will see a message that Search is not available. The change applies to school-managed Google Workspace for Education accounts and reverses Google’s earlier decision to enable some AI tools by default.

Google says the move responds to feedback from educators and parents concerned about AI shortcuts in classrooms. For schools that do enable AI, Google plans to offer a Guided Learning mode designed to guide students rather than give direct answers.
