DirectX Update Cuts Ray Tracing Memory by Up to 90% in Tests - tech
(hx) 01:40 PM CET - Nov,03 2026
Microsoft's latest DirectX Raytracing preview can slash the memory needed for ray-tracing data structures by nearly 90% in official samples. The Agility SDK 1.722 preview, released October 28, 2026, adds Clustered Geometry and Partitioned TLAS.

On an AMD Radeon RX 9070, Microsoft’s test scene dropped acceleration structure memory from 7,519 MiB to 774 MiB. Frame rate jumped from 1.2 fps to 79 fps in the same controlled sample. Microsoft warns real games will see smaller gains and that the features need extra temporary memory while building.

The technology works on existing ray-tracing GPUs, including all Nvidia RTX cards, AMD RX 9000 series, and Intel Arc B-series. Games using it are expected next year.
