Claude Code Blocks Game Clones - And Legitimate Dev Work Too - briefly|
| (hx) 06:52 PM CET - Nov,01 2026 | Anthropic added a new rule to Claude Code on Opus 5.5 that stops the AI from recreating specific existing video games, even if the copy is renamed.
The rule tells Claude to build original games, games in a genre, or projects from a user’s own designs and assets. It does not allow recreations of particular commercial titles.
Addy Osmani of Anthropic confirmed the change because using Claude to infringe intellectual property breaks the company’s usage policy.
Developers report the filters are also blocking legitimate tasks. These include modding, reverse-engineering, crash dump analysis, anti-cheat development, and debugging their own projects.
Claude appears unable to reliably tell the difference between copying a commercial game and working on original or authorized software.
Osmani said Anthropic will keep refining the rule. He invited developers whose own projects get wrongly refused to contact him.
The change arrived around October 27 via a server-side instruction.
