Rufus 4.16 Beta Works Around AMI NTFS Firmware Bug Affecting Millions of PCs - tech|
| (hx) 11:15 AM CET - Oct,31 2026 |
The popular free USB boot media tool Rufus released version 4.16 Beta on October 30, 2026. The biggest change is a workaround for a long-standing bug in the AMI UEFI NTFS driver (version 0x10000).
This driver is commonly found in the firmware of motherboards and systems from Asus, Gigabyte, Dell, and Intel. According to Rufus developer Pete Batard, the driver can return completely incorrect data when it reads fragmented files from NTFS volumes. In practice, this means files that pass checksums in Windows or Linux can fail validation when checked from the UEFI environment. Batard says the problem affects millions of PCs.
The issue was reported to AMI in early 2024. The company acknowledged it, but no firmware fix has been released. Board manufacturers are also unlikely to issue updates for it. Instead of waiting for a firmware patch that may never arrive, Rufus 4.16 Beta now forces files to be written contiguously on NTFS media. This prevents the trigger condition for the bug. The approach is similar to one used by 7-Zip since version 17.0.
The update also improves USB device reporting. Rufus can now correctly identify USB 3.2 (20 Gbps), USB 4.0 (40 Gbps), and USB 4.1 (80 Gbps) devices.
Other changes in the beta include fixes for silent installation logic, an ESP partition size regression, Windows User Experience timezone and username issues, a restored classic right-click context menu option, removal of problematic Group Policy usage, improved raw image handling, GRUB updated to 2.16, an updated libcdio library, refreshed DBX URLs, and several security vulnerability fixes.
Rufus 4.16 Beta is available as a pre-release on the official GitHub repository. The current stable release remains 4.15.
