France Votes Gigabyte Tax That Could Cost VLC Over €1M a Year - briefly|
| (hx) 11:16 PM CET - Oct,30 2026 | | French lawmakers passed a new tax on internet traffic in a narrow vote on October 30, 2026. Content providers would pay €0.055 for every gigabyte of data they send to French users, as measured by internet service providers. The Socialist authors of the amendment expect it to raise about €10 billion a year, based on official traffic estimates. The government opposed the measure and warned that roughly half the cost would fall on smaller providers, many of them French. The vote was 11 in favor and 10 against, with only 35 of 577 deputies present. Makers of the free VLC media player said the tax would cost them more than €1 million a year. The measure is part of the 2027 budget bill and is not yet final law.
