C3RB3R Ransomware Hits Synology NAS Devices - tech|
| (hx) 04:03 PM CET - Oct,30 2026 | Synology NAS owners are reporting a wave of ransomware that locks their files and demands Bitcoin.
The malware, identified as C3RB3R (a Cerber variant), renames files with the .L0CK3D extension and drops a read-me3.txt ransom note in affected folders. It asks for about 0.037 Bitcoin, roughly $3,000, and threatens to double the price after five days.
Chinese security firm 360 has linked the attacks to two critical DSM flaws (CVE-2026-13639 and CVE-2026-13684) that Synology patched in September. Synology says the activity targets devices still running older software vulnerable to a 2024 flaw. Some reports mention newer DSM versions, but the exact entry point is not fully confirmed in every case.
The attacks have been seen since early October and accelerated in late October. Users should update DSM immediately, remove unnecessary public internet access, and test their backups.
