Samsung TV Spyware Removed: Codex Debloat Makes Set 3x Faster - tech
(hx) 12:19 PM CEST - Oct,22 2026
Jake Stevens used OpenAI’s Codex to strip tracking and bloat from his Samsung Tizen TV after Claude refused to help with rooting. He disabled Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) that samples the screen roughly every half-second to fingerprint what is playing, including HDMI inputs from game consoles, plus Bixby wake-word detectors that listen in the room. The cleanup produced a measurable speed jump—he showed before-and-after results claiming the TV ran about three times faster.

Stevens released the open-source Quiet Tizen repo so others can reproduce the work on a tested 2025 U8000F model running Tizen 9. The project installs a lighter native launcher and selectively disables advertising, ACR, voice, and context services via reversible registry and package changes. Independent research and a 2026 Texas settlement confirm Samsung’s ACR (Viewing Information Services) does capture screen fingerprints for advertising, and users can already turn it off in settings—though deeper debloating requires technical steps like temporary root.
