EA Shuts Down BioWare After 30 Years, Cancels Next Mass Effect - briefly|
| (hx) 11:29 PM CEST - Oct,21 2026 | Electronic Arts is closing BioWare, the studio behind Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Knights of the Old Republic and other classic role-playing games, after more than 30 years.
BioWare confirmed the shutdown on social media, stating that early development on the next Mass Effect project is also ending. The move is part of broader cost-cutting at EA, which is laying off around 400 employees company-wide, including roughly 50 at BioWare.
The decision comes months after EA completed a $55 billion leveraged buyout led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. In a letter to staff, EA executives said the company has taken a hard look at its business and is focusing on fewer, larger projects while cancelling some in development.
BioWare was acquired by EA in 2007. Its most recent major release, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, underperformed expectations.
