Classic Bus Simulator OMSI 2 Gets a Modern 64-Bit Rewrite After 13 Years - briefly|
| (SABOT) 12:29 AM CEST - Oct,15 2026 | OMSI 2 has been one of the most detailed bus simulators since its release in December 2013. The original game is a 32-bit program that has needed a special 4GB patch for years just to use more memory on modern computers.
A new community project called openOMSI aims to fix that. It is a complete rewrite written in Rust that runs as a true 64-bit application with modern graphics support.
Players still need their original OMSI 2 installation because openOMSI loads the existing maps, buses, and mods. The project is still early but already supports Windows, Linux, and other platforms.
This gives the long-running community a path past the old technical limits that have held the game back for more than a decade.
