Microsoft Confirms Windows 11 Black Screen Bug - tech|
| (hx) 08:03 PM CEST - Sep,25 2026 | Microsoft has confirmed that recent Windows 11 updates can leave a black screen after sign-in instead of the desktop. The problem started with the August 27, 2026 preview updates - KB5120996 on version 26H1 and KB5120998 on 24H2 and 25H2 - and later cumulative updates can trigger it too.
Microsoft says the failure is seen mainly on Azure Virtual Desktop hosts that use FSLogix, especially with some existing user profiles. Affected users can sign in, but Explorer may crash and the desktop never loads on its own.
Until a permanent fix ships, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, choose Run new task, type explorer.exe, and press OK. Microsoft lists the issue as mitigated, not fixed, and is offering a Known Issue Rollback for IT-managed PCs while it prepares a future Windows update.
