Steam Beta Adds 500 Mbit Pyrowave Streaming - tech
(hx) 07:35 PM CEST - Sep,23 2026
Valve has added an experimental Pyrowave codec to the Steam Client Beta for Remote Play, aiming for lower latency by using much more bandwidth.

The codec, created by Hans-Kristian Arntzen, encodes and decodes on the GPU and can run at a manual bitrate of 100 to 500 Mbit/s.

Valve says it uses five to ten times the bandwidth of other streaming codecs, so both PCs should sit on at least Gigabit Ethernet.

HDR turns on automatically when host and client support it, and optional YUV 4:4:4 can sharpen desktop text on 4K screens.

Pyrowave is off by default in advanced Remote Play settings on Windows and macOS, with Linux needing the experimental SteamRT3 client.

Steam Link on phones is coming later, and Valve notes the new codec will not cut lag on every network.
