Microsoft Patents Ads After Boss Fights - briefly|
| (hx) 08:27 AM CEST - Sep,23 2026 | Microsoft has published a U.S. patent application that describes pausing games to show ads after natural breaks such as boss fights, cutscenes, quests, and multiplayer rounds.
The filing, US 2026/0260258 A1 and titled Contextually Aware Management of Interactive Software Application Access, was filed on April 23, 2026 and published on September 3.
Players would start with a credit of playtime or progress, and watching a video or static ad would grant another credit so they can keep going.
Example credits in the document include 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or an hour, or milestones such as finishing a level, three multiplayer matches, or beating a specific NPC.
The system is written to work on locally installed and streamed games across PCs, consoles, phones, TVs, and headsets.
A patent application is not a product launch, and Microsoft has not named any Xbox game or Game Pass plan that would use it.

Do they not see Steam OS and other applications that run games under different Linux distros?! I guess they are still counting that as <1% of users. That is going to change, it already is. | |
