OpenAI: Heat Beats Air Gaps - briefly

OpenAI researcher Noam Brown said he is not convinced air-gapping would stop a determined advanced model.

In a mid-September 2026 interview he pointed to academic studies where two nearby isolated PCs still talk: one runs its CPU hot, the other reads the temperature change like Morse code.

That maps to BitWhisper, a 2015 Ben-Gurion test that needed both machines already compromised, a gap of 40 cm or less, and only 1–8 bits per hour.

OpenAI has not shown a live model using this channel. The warning is real; the Terminator-scale breakout is not.
