Tim Berners-Lee: He Gave the Web Away - briefly|
| (hx) 12:23 PM CEST - Sep,06 2026 |
Tim Berners-Lee proposed the World Wide Web at CERN in 1989 and built HTTP, HTML and URLs. On 30 April 1993 CERN put the code in the public domain. No patent. No fee. Gopher, a rival from the University of Minnesota, tried licence fees the same year and faded. The “first trillionaire instead of Elon” line is a tweet, not a fact.
In June 2021 he sold an NFT of the original source as art at Sotheby’s for $5.4 million. The money went to causes he and his wife support. He invented the layer. He did not invent TCP, fibre, or the whole internet. He chose not to own the layer.
