56k.rip Dials You Back to 1996 - Then Hangs Up - briefly|
| (hx) 11:36 AM CEST - Sep,05 2026 |
A working browser project at 56k.rip (https://56k.rip) recreates the full 1996 dial-up ritual: a fake desktop, Dial-Up Networking, the off-hook click, touch tones, and about twenty seconds of a real modem handshake.
Pick 14.4, 28.8 or 56k and the same page actually takes longer on the slower line, because every page is served against a real byte budget at that rate - photos sharpen line by line, downloads crawl or fail, and the call drops if someone "picks up the phone."
Behind the screech sits a tiny period web: guestbook, webring, classifieds, weather, minesweeper, paint, mail, chat, and a command prompt, with most sounds synthesized in the browser and pictures drawn in the old 216-color web-safe palette.
Nothing needs an account and nothing is stored off your machine. Turn the speakers on and try it at https://56k.rip.
I've been playing around on that website a bit-it's really a blast... so nostalgic. I'm actually wondering where I put my first US Robotics modem... |

I miss the sound of the HDD seeks and clicks ;-)
These days you can't tell when there's a heavy workload going on... | |
