NASA Targets Nuclear Mars Ship for 2028 - briefly|

President Donald Trump said Friday that NASA is working on a nuclear-powered spacecraft aimed at a Mars mission in 2028.
He made the remark at NASA’s Johnson Space Center while honoring the Artemis II crew.
The ship is Space Reactor-1 Freedom, a NASA and Energy Department project first unveiled in March 2026.
NASA’s official mission page targets a late-2028 launch and a 2029 Mars flyby, using a small fission reactor to power electric thrusters.
The uncrewed craft is slated to drop three Ingenuity-class SkyFall helicopters — it is not a crewed landing.
Trump called the vehicle an early piece of a future “American Star fleet,” which is a speech line, not a fleet already built.
