Why Microsoft Really Dropped Pinball From Windows - briefly|
| (hx) 04:31 PM CEST - Aug,22 2026 |
Microsoft removed 3D Pinball from Windows Vista for a technical reason, not licensing issues.
During the 64-bit port of Windows XP, the game developed a serious bug where the ball passed straight through objects like a ghost.
The original code had been written years earlier by an outside company and was poorly documented.
Engineers couldn’t even locate the collision detection code or identify the floating-point error causing the problem.
With millions of lines of code still left to port and a tight deadline, the team decided it wasn’t worth the time.
The game has never returned as a built-in feature.
