New Tool Fixes Broken HTTPS on Old Windows Systems - tech|
| (hx) 10:14 AM CEST - Aug,21 2026 |
A lightweight open-source utility called RootCertUpdater helps update outdated root certificates on Windows systems from XP to 11.
The standalone tool is written in AutoIt and requires no PowerShell or .NET Framework.
It downloads the official Microsoft certificate trust lists (authroot.stl and disallowedcert.stl) and installs them using the native Windows certutil command.
On Windows 7 it also automatically enables TLS 1.2 support through registry changes.
This resolves common “Certificate Invalid” and connection errors when accessing modern websites on older operating systems.
The project is available on GitHub under the account ibay613.
