VLC media player can take 20–30 seconds or longer to open a simple MP3 file on Windows, according to widespread user reports.

VideoLAN, the developers of VLC, says Microsoft Defender is interfering with the player’s plugin cache after a Windows update.

This forces VLC to re-scan hundreds of modules on every launch instead of using the cached data.

The delays disappear once users regenerate the plugin cache or reinstall VLC.

Some users have also fixed the issue by excluding the VLC folder from Microsoft Defender scans.
