Xbox Plans to Keep Physical Discs for Back-Compatible - console

Digital Foundry’s John Linneman reported that sources indicated Microsoft planned to continue supporting physical game discs on future Xbox hardware.

The priority was backward compatibility — ensuring players’ existing disc libraries remain playable — rather than retail disc sales.

This was reportedly the case before Microsoft’s recent Xbox business “reset,” and current plans remain unclear.

The comments come amid Sony’s decision to end physical disc production for new PlayStation games starting in 2028.

Possible options mentioned include external disc drives or disc-to-digital conversion features.
