Repasting a 5-Year-Old CPU Restored Lost Performance - tech
(hx) 03:58 PM CEST - Aug,03 2026
An XDA writer replaced the dried-out thermal paste on his five-year-old Ryzen 9 5900X and immediately recovered performance he didn’t realize was gone.

Before the swap, the CPU regularly hit 90°C in games like Call of Duty: Warzone and Cyberpunk 2077, causing boost clocks to drop to 4.4–4.5 GHz.

After cleaning and applying Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut Extreme under a 360mm AIO, temperatures fell to around 80°C.

The extra thermal headroom let the CPU sustain boost clocks near 4.8 GHz again.

This simple maintenance brought the processor back closer to its original behavior without any hardware upgrades.

It proves how degraded thermal paste can quietly throttle older systems over time.
