Microsoft has apologized after a major Xbox outage that lasted roughly 16–20 hours.
Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet called it “an unacceptable situation” and said the company "must do better."
The problem was caused by a failure in a licensing service that Xbox depends on, which sits outside the main Xbox systems.
As a result, many players could not sign in, view their game libraries, or launch digital (and in some cases physical) games they already owned.
Services were fully restored on Monday afternoon after engineers isolated the failing system and shifted traffic.
Microsoft is now running a full post-incident review to prevent a single point of failure from causing similar widespread disruptions again.
