CUDA Just Cracked Apple Silicon - NVIDIA's Moat is Leaking - tech

Developers have gotten real CUDA kernels running natively on Apple Silicon GPUs through the open-source OpenFPM library.

Using a translation chain via SPIR-V and MoltenVK (with major help from GPT-5.6 Sol), the same CUDA code now executes on Metal without source changes.

A demanding 3D fluid particle simulation ran in 6 seconds on an M3 Pro GPU versus 60 seconds on the CPU - a clean 10x speedup with full GPU saturation.

The translation layer added almost zero overhead, something rare in cross-compilation.

This open-source breakthrough means countless CUDA codebases can now run on MacBooks.
