Xbox chief Phil Spencer says skyrocketing component prices driven by AI demand are making dedicated game consoles harder to produce profitably.
He noted that chip makers are prioritizing high-margin AI hardware over gaming devices, leaving console manufacturers struggling with supply and costs.
Spencer questioned whether traditional consoles will remain necessary as streaming and PC gaming improve.
He suggested gamers may simply shift to PCs or stream games to their TVs if new consoles become too expensive.

A decent PC beats any console any day. Consoles have been around because they are dedicated, zero maintenance as opposed to PCs. That's the only reason consoles still exist today.

You stream nothing... You just plug in video cable - no streaming there!

Not quite. It highlights how little Microsoft execs know about the industry they are supposedly leaders of. Consoles have always been secondary since the dawn of PC, and always will be. Zero changes. Parents will always prefer a zero maintenance console. What they dislike is the fact that they own nothing. In a subscription model, the console hardware should be free, much like how you get the set-top box with your TV or the modem with your internet subscription - and it should be updated for free when the service changes. This is the biggest problem you need to solve. Plus, the fact that there are no decent games coming (either PC or console) - nobody is willing to pay for shite titles. |
