Sony is reassigning staff at its largest PlayStation disc manufacturing plant in Thalgau, Austria, to produce optical microlenses instead.

The facility, which currently produces hundreds of thousands of discs daily for games, Blu-rays, and CDs, will see output drop sharply starting in 2028 as Sony moves away from physical game releases.

The company has invested €30 million in new equipment and is retraining its roughly 300 employees for micro optics production, with no layoffs planned.

This change follows Sony's earlier announcement ending physical disc releases for PlayStation games from 2028 onward.

The pivot allows the plant to continue operations by focusing on miniaturization of optical systems for various industries.
