Former Baldur's Gate Designer Turns Down BG4 Offer, Calls It 'Insanity' - interview

Veteran BioWare designer James Ohlen, co-lead designer on Baldur’s Gate 2, has revealed he was asked to work on Baldur’s Gate 4 after Larian Studios passed on the project.

Ohlen turned down the offer from Hasbro, saying it would be “insanity” to try to follow Baldur’s Gate 3.

He believes BG3 raised the bar so high that any sequel would inevitably be compared to it and likely fall short.

The former designer is currently focused on his own studio’s sci-fi RPG, Exodus, and felt competing directly with Larian’s masterpiece was not realistic.

This adds to the growing sense that developing a worthy follow-up to Baldur’s Gate 3 is an extremely tall order.
