Game Studio Closures and Layoffs: Late June 2026 Summary - briefly|
| (hx) 12:56 AM CEST - Jul,01 2026 |
The video game industry continues to face significant turbulence, with
multiple studio closures, major layoffs, and restructuring efforts
reported in the final days of June 2026. Here's a clear breakdown of
the key developments from the past 10 days.
### Confirmed Closures and Major Layoffs
- Bungie (Sony Interactive Entertainment): On June 25, Bungie
announced major layoffs affecting roughly 292–400 employees (about half
the studio). Most of the Destiny 2 development team was cut as active
content support for the game ends. The studio is shifting focus to its
extraction shooter Marathon, but the cuts represent one of the largest
single-studio reductions in recent months.
- Queen Digital Entertainment (QDE Studio): The small mobile
puzzle studio, founded by former King (Candy Crush) executives, fully
closed its operations on or around June 26. Employees confirmed the
shutdown via LinkedIn posts.
- Keywords (San Francisco office): Approximately 128 employees
were laid off on June 26 as part of broader restructuring.
### Xbox/Microsoft Studio Restructuring (Ongoing Reports)
Microsoft's Xbox division is undergoing a significant "reset,! with
multiple first-party studios facing closure, major cuts, or potential
spin-offs. Key updates from mid-to-late June include:
- Ninja Theory (Hellblade series): Reportedly being shut down.
Employees were informed in mid-June that the studio faces closure
unless a buyer is found. A new Senua game was recently showcased, but
the studio's future remains uncertain.
- Compulsion Games (South of Midnight, We Happy Few): At high
risk of closure or major downsizing. The studio is reportedly in
negotiations with Microsoft to buy back independence.
- Double Fine (Psychonauts series): Also in active talks to spin
off or avoid full shutdown amid the broader Xbox restructuring.
- Arkane Lyon/Austin (Dishonored, Deathloop): Mentioned in
rumors as potentially at risk, with reports of the Blade game being
over budget and possibly canceled or heavily delayed.
These Xbox moves appear part of a larger strategy to focus on big
franchises while cutting or selling underperforming or smaller studios.
### Games Likely Impacted or Canceled
- Destiny 2 expansions and ongoing content (heavily affected by
Bungie cuts).
- Unannounced or in-development projects from Ninja Theory, Compulsion
Games, Double Fine, and Arkane.
- Blade (Arkane) — reportedly over budget with a delayed release; may
be canceled.
### Overall Context
The past 10 days highlight continued cost-cutting across the industry,
driven by high development costs, shifting player expectations, and
post-pandemic adjustments. While some studios (like those under Xbox)
are exploring independence or sales to survive, others like Bungie and
Queen Digital have already seen deep cuts or full closures.
This wave follows earlier 2026 layoffs at companies like Metacore and
Vertigo Games. The situation remains fluid, especially with Xbox
negotiations ongoing. |

- Compulsion Games (South of Midnight, We Happy Few).
- Arkane Lyon/Austin (Dishonored, Deathloop)
They created fantastic titles.
If there's no new We Happy Few 2 or new Dishonored soon to be released, I can understand why they should be closed; it's been years - they are not making money. | |
