WhatsApp has launched a new username feature that lets users connect and chat without exposing their phone numbers to strangers or group members.

Users can now claim unique handles (3-35 characters with letters, numbers, periods, and underscores) to replace phone-based identification.

The feature includes an optional four-digit “username key” PIN for extra protection against unsolicited messages.

This major privacy update is rolling out globally in phases and remains optional for those who prefer the traditional system.

It helps reduce risks like spam, SIM-swapping attacks, and unwanted contact in public or professional settings.
