Tim Sweeney: New Multiplayer Games Fail Because Players Won't Leave Their Friend Groups - briefly
(hx) 09:48 AM CEST - Jun,23 2026
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney says many new multiplayer games are struggling because players are reluctant to leave the established friend groups they’ve built in titles like Fortnite, Call of Duty, Counter-Strike, and Apex Legends.

According to Sweeney, only massive mega-hits that appear every few years can successfully pull entire communities to a new game.

He believes this “friend group lock-in” is one of the main reasons why many recent multiplayer releases have flopped.

To help solve this problem, Epic plans to make Unreal Engine 6 significantly more interconnected, allowing easier movement between games while keeping social connections intact.

Sweeney’s comments highlight the growing challenge for developers trying to break into the saturated multiplayer market.

The strategy reflects Epic’s long-term vision of creating a more connected gaming ecosystem through its engine technology.
