Microsoft has confirmed that the next annual Windows 11 update (version 26H2) will be delivered as a small enablement package for faster and easier deployment.
This approach uses a shared servicing branch with versions 24H2 and 25H2, meaning most devices can upgrade with minimal disruption - similar to a regular monthly update rather than a full OS reinstall.
The enablement model reduces deployment size to KB/MB level, shortens installation time to minutes, and keeps the same security baseline and compatibility testing.
Devices on Windows 11 26H1 cannot use this path and will need a separate upgrade route in the future.
IT admins should start testing via the Windows Insider Program (Experimental channel) and plan rollout rings using Intune, WSUS, or Autopatch.
The update also resets the support lifecycle, providing 24-36 months of support depending on the edition. |
