Windows 11's Modern Media Player Uses 3.5x More RAM Than Legacy Version - tech
(hx) 12:39 AM CEST - Jun,21 2026
Microsoft’s June 12 update for the modern Windows 11 Media Player added useful fixes like custom caption styling, better playback stability, and clearer codec error messages.

However, real-world tests show the modern app is much heavier, using around 377MB of RAM at idle compared to just 103MB for the legacy Windows Media Player.

It also launches videos noticeably slower, taking several seconds where the legacy player and VLC open files almost instantly.

The modern app paywalls popular codecs like HEVC (common on phones), while free alternatives handle them natively.

Despite Microsoft’s efforts to improve it, the 17-year-old legacy player from the Windows 7 era often feels faster, lighter, and more reliable for basic playback.
