EU Rejects "Stop Killing Games": You Buy Video Games for a While, Not Forever - briefly|
| (hx) 04:38 PM CEST - Jun,17 2026 |
The European Commission has officially rejected the "Stop Destroying Videogames" citizens' initiative, despite it gathering over 1.29 million verified signatures calling for legal protections to keep purchased games playable long-term.
In its June 16, 2026 communication, the EU stated it cannot propose any legal obligation requiring publishers to maintain servers, provide offline modes, or keep games functional after they stop selling them commercially.
The decision cites existing intellectual property rights and argues that forcing such requirements would be disproportionate, while noting that current consumer laws already offer some protections like transparency and refunds.
Instead of new rules, the Commission plans to launch stakeholder discussions with the video game industry and consumer groups to develop a voluntary code of conduct on managing games' "end of life" by the end of 2026.
Gamers and campaigners reacted with frustration and memes, arguing the ruling turns purchases into temporary rentals and has sparked calls that "if buying isn't owning, then pirating isn't stealing."
The rejection highlights ongoing debates about digital ownership, game preservation, and the power of big publishers in the live-service era, though the initiative's organizers say they won't give up.

They shit on everything with their bureaucracy because of "customer protection", but fail willingly here. | |
