Steam Workshop Abused to Spread Malware via Wallpaper Engine - tech

Threat actors are abusing Steam Workshop by uploading malicious wallpapers for the popular Wallpaper Engine app.

These fake "application wallpapers" install backdoors, infostealers (Lumma, Vidar), crypto miners, and ransomware when activated.

Some malicious wallpapers were downloaded tens of thousands of times before Steam removed them.

The attacks have been ongoing since late 2025, often hiding payloads in password-protected archives.

Kaspersky researchers found dozens of infected packages targeting Steam accounts and full system access.
