id Software Disappears from Zenimax Job Listings After Doom Dark Ages Underperforms - briefly
(hx) 03:53 PM CEST - Jun,16 2026
Veteran studio id Software has been removed from the Zenimax job application pulldown menu, with links now leading to empty filters.

This comes shortly after reports that *Doom: The Dark Ages* sold fewer than 1 million copies, far below expectations for the franchise despite strong Game Pass numbers.

Many players criticized the medieval setting and gameplay shifts away from the successful 2016 formula, contributing to softer full-price sales.

The disappearance of id Software from the official Zenimax careers site has sparked widespread concern about potential layoffs or restructuring at the iconic studio.

While Bethesda/Zenimax has not commented, the timing aligns with broader industry challenges for single-player AAA titles outside Game Pass.

In related news, veteran game designer Sandy Petersen, creator of Doom, Quake, Call of Cthulhu, and Age of Empires, has spoken out against efforts to "save" struggling legacy studios like Blizzard.

In a direct social media response to concerned fans, he stated that no game company needs saving if it fails.

Petersen pointed out that past industry giants such as Microsoft, id Software, Ensemble Studios, and Atari were never rescued when they declined, yet gaming continued to thrive.

He argued that failing studios will simply be replaced by new, likely superior companies as talent moves on and innovates elsewhere.
