RAM Crisis Sends DDR5 Prices Soaring 4x in Germany - tech|

A severe memory shortage is hammering German retail prices, with DDR5 modules now costing over four times more than in mid-2025.
The crisis stems from OpenAI’s massive contracts with Samsung and SK Hynix last November, which locked up roughly 40% of global DRAM production for AI servers.
According to the latest 3DCenter price index, DDR5 has jumped 319%, SODIMM modules 248%, and even DDR3/4 has nearly tripled since last summer.
SSDs and HDDs have also doubled in price, while GPUs saw only a modest 14% rise, showing the memory sector is hit hardest.
Panic buying and limited new capacity have kept prices elevated, with no quick relief in sight as chipmakers prioritize high-margin AI demand.
