Linus Torvalds Slams AI Coding Hype: "It's Just Like a Compiler" - briefly|
| (hx) 05:02 PM CEST - Jun,05 2026 |
Linus Torvalds, creator of Linux, strongly criticized the hype around AI writing most code during his appearance at Open Source Summit 2026.
He expressed frustration with claims that “99% of our code is written by AI,” comparing it to how compilers have long generated nearly all code without anyone saying the compiler “wrote” it.
Torvalds acknowledged AI’s real benefits, noting a 20% jump in Linux kernel submissions this release thanks to AI tools that he himself uses for productivity gains.
He warned that AI is flooding small open source projects with low-quality “drive-by” bug reports from users who prompt the AI, file an issue, and then disappear when asked for more details or a patch.
Torvalds also cautioned that people who don’t understand system complexity risk creating flawed processes and fragile code when relying heavily on AI prompts.
His comments cut through the noise by framing AI as a powerful productivity tool — not a replacement for human understanding and responsibility.
