He Upgraded from a $200 Laptop to a 1.5TB RAM Beast - tech

Chris Anderson shared how his collaborator Sean Jungbluth ditched a cheap $200 laptop for a powerful surplus server boasting 1.5TB of RAM, originally used for genome analysis. The massive machine, packed with RAM sticks, now helps run a pick-and-place robot turned into an automated "bug picker" for biology experiments. This setup uses Opulo tech to make advanced science more affordable and accessible for DIY researchers. The project highlights how surplus data center hardware is fueling innovation at the intersection of AI, robotics, and biology.

I asked Sean to "get a better computer than this trash $200 laptop" to run the pick-and-place and so he shows up with this monster with 1.5TB of RAM, which he got surplus at a great price to do genome analysis.
