Alibaba has unveiled its latest Zhenwu M890 AI chip, built to directly challenge NVIDIA’s Hopper series in the global AI race. The new accelerator packs 144GB of HBM3 memory and delivers up to three times the performance of NVIDIA’s H20 while offering compute power comparable to the older A100. It runs on Alibaba’s custom PPU architecture with strong support for modern low-precision formats like FP8 and FP4, making it well-suited for advanced agentic AI workloads. The chip is already shipping in volume to hundreds of customers across China as US export curbs push local tech firms toward homegrown solutions. Alibaba also shared an ambitious roadmap through 2028, promising further big performance jumps with each new generation.
