Microsoft is phasing out SMS text codes for personal account sign-ins and recovery due to rising fraud risks like SIM-swapping.

This change affects services such as Xbox, Outlook, OneDrive, and Windows logins, but not work or school accounts.

Users will now be prompted to use passkeys with device biometrics, the Microsoft Authenticator app, or a verified backup email for easier and more secure access.

The move aligns with a broader industry shift toward passwordless security.
