Windows 11 May Update Crashes on Tiny EFI Space - tech|
| (hx) 10:03 PM CEST - May,17 2026 |
Microsoft has confirmed that its latest Windows 11 security update, KB5089549 (released May 12, 2026), fails to install on devices with 10 MB or less free space on the EFI System Partition.
The update stalls at 35-36% during restart, rolls back changes, and shows error 0x800f0922, leaving users frustrated.
Two temporary workarounds are available: run a simple registry command (reg add "HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlBfsvc" /v EspPaddingPercent /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f in admin Command Prompt) or restart multiple times to trigger Microsoft's server-side Known Issue Rollback.
A permanent fix is coming in a future update. Always back up your system before tweaking the registry.
