Apple Announces Tim Cook's Departure as CEO - briefly|
| (hx) 12:15 AM CEST - Apr,21 2026 | Tim Cook will step down as Apple's CEO on September 1, 2026, after nearly 15 years leading the company to unprecedented growth and a multi-trillion-dollar valuation.
John Ternus, Apple's senior vice president of hardware engineering and a 25-year veteran who oversees products driving about 80% of revenue, will succeed him as CEO. Cook will transition to the role of executive chairman, ensuring continuity during the handover. The move follows internal succession planning and comes despite Cook recently downplaying near-term retirement rumors.
Analysts view the shift as a strategic step to bring fresh hardware-focused leadership into the AI era while maintaining Apple's operational strengths.
John Ternus is Apple's Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering (since 2021), a 50-year-old mechanical engineer who is set to become the company's next CEO on September 1, 2026, succeeding Tim Cook. He joined Apple in 2001 on the Product Design team after earning a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and working briefly as a mechanical engineer at Virtual Research Systems.
Ternus has led hardware engineering for nearly all of Apple's major products, including every generation of iPad, the iPhone lineup (taking charge in 2020), Mac computers, AirPods, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro. Key contributions he oversaw include the full transition of Macs from Intel processors to custom Apple Silicon (M-series chips), which dramatically improved performance and efficiency, as well as the development of new product categories like iPad and AirPods.
