Microsoft Silently Shuts Down VeraCrypt Developer's Signing Account, Halting Windows Releases - tech|
| (hx) 09:02 AM CEST - Apr,08 2026 | Microsoft has abruptly terminated the Microsoft account used by Mounir IDRASSI, the lead developer of VeraCrypt, to sign Windows drivers and bootloaders, with no prior warning, explanation, or possibility of appeal.
In a March 30, 2026, post on SourceForge, IDRASSI revealed that repeated outreach attempts yielded only automated replies, blocking new Windows builds of the popular open-source disk encryption tool while Linux and macOS updates continue.
VeraCrypt, a successor to the discontinued TrueCrypt, provides on-the-fly encryption relied upon by users seeking strong privacy and security on Windows, the platform where most of its user base operates. The incident has sparked concerns about dependency on a single vendor's infrastructure for critical open-source security software and the fragility of driver signing processes.
IDRASSI has invited proposals from the community to resolve the distribution hurdle for Windows users.

quote: If an iPhone is fully updated, powered off (Before First Unlock - BFU), and secured with a long, complex alphanumeric password, it is practically impossible for police to access the data without the passcode.
VeraCrypt.
quote: using it to hide illegal content is unlawful, and in many jurisdictions, you can be legally compelled to provide passwords to law enforcement
Just because somone it’s legitimately uses it, it’s the morons out there that use it for ulterior motives.
Just need to look at e-bikes modified to run faster than somebody with a bike license, paying for tax, plates, insurance - who’s being taken for a ride here.
It’s governments and law that’s at fault as per usual and always will be. | |
