Gamers Nostalgically Hail 1996 as the Golden Age of PC Gaming - briefly
(hx) 10:15 PM CEST - Mar,31 2026
In a nostalgic X post, influencer Brock Pierson celebrated the 1996 release of Duke Nukem 3D, dubbing it part of "the golden age of PC gaming" and asking followers if they were there. The post, featuring retro gameplay footage, quickly sparked an outpouring of memories from users who recalled playing the iconic first-person shooter on early PCs, often via dial-up services like Kali.net. Many shared stories of after-school sessions, custom maps, and the game's memorable one-liners like "It's time to kick ass and chew bubblegum." The thread highlights how Duke Nukem 3D remains a beloved classic, with some fans still firing it up decades later.

Of course it is along with Shadow Warrior, blood, RoTT, Hexen, Heretic and more.
I still have it and play it on my both rigs.

The Neverhood!!! Oh, yes. I've been waiting for sequels on that one for a long time. I guess I still am.
I never really liked The Settlers II - the UI, the engine, the game - I always preferred The Siedlers, especially because you could do split-screen with two mouse and play with your best friend. To me, The Settlers III in 1999 was the next good Settlers game. There was a Settlers II 10th Anniversary release, had far better UI, the gameplay was better but its replay value was very low.
Quake - I modded the shit out of it. I built a Mechwarrior II mod with a mech powerup. You could hop into a mech, fire homing missiles and all that :D That was the time when I learned a lot about modding. I loved the fact you could write a C code, compile with GCC and run it in the game. And yes, this was the time when people had no internet to look shit up.

Ultima Underworld was another game I played a lot.
