Windows 11's January 2026 Update is causing major issues for some users - tech|
| (hx) 09:34 AM CET - Jan,18 2026 | Windows 11's January 2026 Update is causing major issues for some users:
This mandatory update causes problems for some users, including:
- Brief black screen before desktop appears
- Desktop background resets
- Classic Outlook fails to open (requires killing process in Task Manager each time)
- File Explorer ignores desktop.ini customizations
January 2026 Update (KB5074109) is a mandatory Windows Update, and it installs automatically. Bumps OS Build to Build 26200.7623 (25H2) or Build 26100.7623 (24H2). Microsoft has confirmed that a bug exists where Outlook Classic does not open until you manually kill the process using Task Manager each time.
Moreover, it looks like Microsoft accidentally broke desktop.ini in File Explorer. If you run into issues, you will need to uninstall Windows 11 KB5074109 and pause updates.
Update: Microsoft was forced to issue emergency out-of-band updates for Windows 11 after the latest security patches broke PC shutdowns and sign-ins.
The out-of-band updates, KB5077744 and KB5077797, are now available via Windows Update and are rolling out to everyone. Once installed, your PC should again be able to shut down successfully.
