Ex-Bethesda Elder Scrolls Lore Chief Says He Left Over Bureaucracy and Broken Promises, Imagined TES6 as Darker Saga - briefly
(hx) 10:29 AM CET - Jan,17 2026
Longtime Elder Scrolls loremaster Kurt Kuhlmann revealed why he departed Bethesda in 2023 after more than two decades — citing growing bureaucracy, communication breakdowns during Starfield’s development, and a broken verbal promise that he would be lead designer on The Elder Scrolls 6. Once a hands-on designer, Kuhlmann became frustrated with the studio’s expanding size and layers of management that distanced him from creative work. He also shared his bold vision for TES6, likening it to The Empire Strikes Back with the Thalmor emerging victorious and setting up future conflict, though he now doubts such a cliffhanger would ever be used. After leaving Bethesda, he joined Lightspeed LA, and continues to watch the franchise’s future from the sidelines.
-- Elder Scrolls 6 was supposed to be their next game after Fallout 4
-- Todd Howard had promised him the lead design role on TES6, only to find out 11 years later that they went with someone else
-- The vibe at Bethesda was very different after Skyrim's success (Kuhlmann was co-lead on Skyrim)
-- "Of course, after Fallout 4 we didn't go to TES6, we made Fallout 76, and then even then we didn't make TES6, we made Starfield, which became this extremely long project compared to other ones."
-- Kuhlmann left Bethesda in 2023 after 20+ years
-- He says the problems at Bethesda pre-date the Microsoft acquisition
-- As the years went on, design leads (including Todd Howard's role) became less hands-on and more "bureaucratic"
-- His version of Elder Scrolls 6 was going to be like 'Empire Strikes Back'.
-- The elven supremacists were the bad guys and they would ultimately come out on top, setting up TES7.

It's a well-known fact that Bethesda sucks ass and completely disregards the user communities.
They are set up to sell subscriptions these days.
Just have a look at their Steam news updates - how many upvotes? 0, because everyone votes it down; too bad Steam does not show the negative numbers. You can read the messages there though: it's clear what users think of Bethesda. Bethesda won't be selling their shit for long, I am sure they will be closed down soon enough.
I think this guy should take his ideas, create a new universe with a studio that actually gives a damn and show Bethesda what could have been theirs. Or, just wait until MS closes Bethesda, then come back and continue.
Either way, Bethesda is the problem; funny how Microsoft does not see that.

Welcome to the *real* world. Nobody cares about your service/career history. Jobs come and go. Fuck me, EA was SOLD after 40+ YEARS to Saudi Arabian company fronted by Trump's son-in-law.

Never mind one egotistical person, imagine a WHOLE company full of them
