Looking back to 1969, baseball stumbled onto something special. The format was brilliantly simple: two teams, battle-tested from a marathon season, squaring off for the pennant. Each had already conquered their division over 162 games. The series started as best-of-five, until 1985 when they added two more potential games - a change that actually made sense. Take the '86 NLCS between the Mets and Astros. That series showed exactly why the old format worked so perfectly. Game 6 stretched into the 16th inning, with Mike Scott looming for Game 7 if Houston could just pull it out. The Mets were facing their own nightmare scenario - nobody wanted to face Scott again. When Jesse Orosco finally struck out Kevin Bass, Shea Stadium erupted in a way modern playoff games rarely match.
