TechNews - Windows 10 Mobile Is Officially Dead - tech|
(hx) 04:52 PM CET - Jan,27 2019 |
- Testing Intel Whiskey Lake CPUs: Core i7-8565U Review -
Intel unveiled a new series of U-series laptop processors last year
designed for ultraportables. These CPUs are codenamed Whiskey Lake, and
they're still 8th-gen parts that are not radically different from Kaby
Lake Refresh. The focus of this review will be the Core i7-8565U,
which is essentially the new flagship 15W CPU in Intel's line-up.
- Triple RAID - Max Performance Or Max Headache??? - WD sent us 3 of their new Black SN750 NVME drives
so we wanted to see what kind of crazy speeds we could get with them
when put into RAID 0. Sadly it didn't go exactly as planned, but we
were still able to get some results that are more than fast enough.
Also let us know in the comments section if you'd like to see us
explore this even further.
- AdoredTV: Comprehending the Navi No-Show - Having
received criticism for leaks that weren't entirely accurate, AdoredTV's
Jim Parker has returned with a new video
that attempts to explain what went wrong and why Navi was a no-show.
While critics are calling this another round of damage control, AMD
hopefuls say that a leak doesn't have to be 100% accurate to be "right."
- Follow Up: More Epyc 7551P Testing & Your Questions
Answered - Wendell of Level1Techs explains, "NUMA is only
really meant to make things better from a program performance
perspective. It's not worse. And Linux is well engineered enough that
in Ubuntu, NUMA on the 2990WX is squeezing all of the performance out
of the platform; out of everything that it possibly can. And you have
to concede that Windows and uniform memory access (UMA) mode is
basically fine. So its not just the Windows bloatedness and overhead.
Its not just differences in the Windows platform. I think that's sort
of the final nail on the whole NUMA versus uniform memory access (UMA).
And its also not being a hardware thing."
- How a Zotac RTX Graphics Card is Made - As part of a (Japanese) writeup on the subject,
Impress Watch posted a video from inside a factory showing how a Zotac
RTX 2000 series graphics card is assemble
- LG 34GK950F Curved Gaming Monitor Review: 144Hz Ultrawide With
HDR - LG's new 34GK950F combines many desirable features
into a single
display. An IPS panel runs at a 144Hz refresh rate without overclock
while delivering FreeSync 2, HDR10 and extended color covering over 90
percent of DCI-P3. LG even throws in blur reduction, which isn't often
seen in FreeSync monitors. This is all wrapped in a stylish chassis
with an ideal 1900R curvature with QHD resolution (3440x1440) and a
pixel density of 109ppi. At around $1,000 (£990), it isn’t cheap but
offers more features than many similarly priced screens, including its
predecessor, the LG 34WK650
- Google Pixel Slate Review: Premium, But Pricey - Regardless
of how good the hardware is (and it’s mostly good), a $1,000-plus Chrome convertible is a long, long way
from the Chromebook’s affordable beginnings. And while you
certainly can do more with Chrome OS today than you could
even two years ago, the operating system still feels like a work in
progress, and plenty of Android apps still don’t look great on this
good-looking hardware.
- Windows Lite will reportedly feature a new Start Menu - Windows
Lite is Microsoft’s ChromeOS competitor, which is expected to run a
user interface called Webshell and which will not look like Windows 10,
and also not be able to be upgraded to Windows 10. It will still
be able to run Windows apps, but only those downloaded from the Store.
Today we have heard one of the ways Windows Lite will be different from
Windows 10 is that it will drop Live Tiles, which does make sense as,
again according to the WC, this is a very underused Windows 10 feature,
both by users and developers.
- Windows 10 Mobile Is Officially Dead - Microsoft has
officially signed the death certificate for Windows 10 mobile as it
recently posted a "Windows 10 Mobile End of Support: FAQ." On
December 10, 2019, "Windows 10 Mobile users are no longer eligible to
receive new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free assisted
support options, or online technical content updates from Microsoft for
free." Microsoft has a suggestion for users of Windows 10 mobile; "move
to a supported Android or iOS device."
- HoloLens news incoming - Microsoft began sending out
invitations for its press event at Mobile World Congress today, which
will be held on Sunday, February 24 at 5pm CET. Speakers at the keynote
will include CEO Satya Nadella, CVP Julia White, and Alex Kipman. Alex
Kipman is known for his work on HoloLens, and HoloLens news is exactly
what we were expecting. Sources told us that MWC is when it will be
officially unveiled that the next HoloLens will use a Snapdragon 850
chipset, making it an always connected PC. It seems likely that we'll
get even more details on Microsoft's next-generation AR headset, and a
full unveil would be particularly interesting.
Don't expect any new Surface hardware, as Panos Panay's name wasn't on
the list. It's possible that the firm could show off some partner
devices, but that's somewhat unlikely given that this is a pre-event
show. For example, at CES, Microsoft did a partner showcase a couple of
days into the event, after partners had announced their new wares.
Aside from HoloLens and the various business applications that will
come from features like 4G LTE, there may be some Azure news as well,
since Julia White will be there. We'll find out more on February 24.
- 15-inch, 4K OLED laptops are coming - Larger OLED laptop
screens are coming sooner than we anticipated. Samsung Displays announced
that it has made a 15.6-inch 4K laptop display and will begin producing
the panels next month. The company plans on providing them to other
manufacturers to put into their premium notebooks. Samsung's 15.6-inch
display has a brightness range of 0.0005 to 600 nits, and its spectrum
of 34 million colors is double that of similar, 15-inch LCD panels.
Samsung claims that its panel can produce blacks that are 200 times
darker than those of LCD panels, and whites will be more than twice as
bright. These attributes contribute to the HDR capabilities of the
panel, and the company claims that the panel passes VESA's new
DisplayHDR TrueBlack standard. While OLED panels provide better
contrast ratios, color gamut, and brightness levels than most LCD
panels, they're also more expensive to produce. Lots of manufacturers
have skipped OLED panels for their premium laptops because they cost
more to put into the device, thereby driving up the retail price for
consumers. Also, OLED screens have burn-in problems that some consumers
don't want to deal with neither in their smartphones nor in their
laptops.
Regardless, Samsung's announcement will be exciting for those who have
been itching for larger, higher-resolution OLED panels in the newest
laptops. It's unclear which manufacturers will be the first to get
Samsung's OLED panels, but plenty of OEMs including HP, Lenovo, and
Dell have laptops with OLED screens slated for launch this year.
- One-Year Update: OLED Burn-in Test - Photos taken
at 48 weeks show only significant image retention for CNN; burn-in
appears to be either minor or non-existent for gaming and other
channels.
- Yes, Batteries Are Our Future. Here's Why - In this video
we'll take a look at the new emerging battery industry.
- $20 Playstation Hack Stick solve the PS Classic problem? - Does
this stick from 8Bitdo fix all the problems with the PS Classic? It
definitely improves it!
- Apple Allegedly Replaced 11 Million Batteries - Apple's
missed revenue targets have sent investors scrambling for explanations,
and a few pointed fingers at Apple's 2017/2018 CPU throttling scandal.
Apple started a
relatively affordable program to replace batteries in older iPhones
for $29, and some analysts thought the program could put a dent in
Apple's profits. That claim hinges on just how many batteries Apple
replaced, and the Daring Fireball blog claims to have a concrete
number. Citing an Apple executive meeting on January 3rd, the report
claims that Apple replaced about 11 million iPhone batteries, which is
far above previous estimates.
- Xiaomi Posts Foldable Phone Teaser - Though the device is
merely a prototype, Lin Bin mentions that Xiaomi would consider mass
producing the folding gadget if there's enough interest in it. It's
possible that such a device could eventually come to the U.S
- Next RAZR Might be a $1,500 Foldable Smartphone - Motorola
will soon revive the RAZR brand for a pricey folding-screen phone for
Verizon, the Wall
Street Journal reports today. The phone is in testing but could
launch as soon as February. The phone would cost roughly $1,500 and be
exclusive to Verizon Wireless. Samsung has said it also plans to
introduce a phone this year with a screen that bends, allowing the
phone to fold in half. Motorola Mobility is owned by Lenovo. The
original RAZR was a thin metal flip phone introduced in 2004. Motorola
revived the RAZR brand in 2011 for a line of Droid phones that were
also exclusive to Verizon. The new "foldable" RAZR has yet to be
announced and no other details are available.
- Nokia Phones Return to US Carriers - Nokia phones are back on US carrier store shelves as
of today. The Nokia 3.1 Plus goes on sale today with Cricket, and
Verizon will start selling the Nokia 2 V on January 31st. The
announcement was made today by HMD
Global, the independent company formed by ex-Nokia employees when
Nokia stopped making its own phones. HMD licenses and has exclusive use
of the Nokia brand for phones. The company plans additional phones for
US carriers this year. "Our approach to operator relationships is not
transactional - our users will see more devices at different price
points launching with our prepaid and post-paid wireless prover [sic]
partners and on the open market", said Maurizio Angelone, Vice
President Americas for HMD Global. The Nokia 3.1 Plus has a tall (2:1)
6-inch HD screen, 3,500 mAh battery, fingerprint reader, NFC, and
Snapdragon 439 processor with 2 GB RAM. It has dual rear cameras
including a 13 megapixel main sensor. It sells for $160 from Cricket.
The Nokia 2 V has a huge 4,000 mAh battery for "two-day battery life".
It also has a 5.5-inch HD display, Snapdragon 425 processor, 8
megapixel main camera, and 8 GB storage plus a memory card slot.
Pricing was not announced for the 2 V.
- Target, Taco Bell Finally Accepting NFC Payments - Apple
Pay and Google Pay are closer to being accepted everywhere, with the
announcement that Target, Taco Bell, Jack in the Box, Hy-Vee and
Speedway are now rolling out support for NFC payments. Target was one
of the last big holdouts in supporting the technology, which lets you
simply tap your NFC-equipped phone or smartwatch on the card terminal
to pay. Target expects its rollout to all 1,850 locations across the US
to be complete in the "coming weeks". Taco Bell and Jack in the Box
expect to finish their rollout in the "next few months". Previous
holdouts CVS, 7-Eleven, and Costco launched support for NFC payments
last year.
- YouTube Bans Dangerous Challenges and Pranks Videos - YouTube
has rolled out new Community Guidelines that will ban videos that
depict dangerous challenges and pranks. Examples of dangerous
challenges and pranks include, setting yourself on fire, eating Tide
Pods, driving blindfolded, shooting a loved one for views, home
invasion pranks, drive-by shooting pranks, and pranks that cause
children severe emotional distress.
- New Bluetooth Sticker Tags Powered by Ambient Radio Waves - A
new design for Bluetooth LE tags removes the need for a battery and
fits into a cheap, thin, stamp-size sticker, or can be embedded
directly in consumer product packaging. A tiny ARM processor transmits
an ecrypted ID code like other Bluetooth tracking tags, but is powered
by a new antenna design that harvests power from ambient radio waves.
It can also sense temperature and weight info, and transmit that data,
as well, to nearby Bluetooth LE devices, including phones. The tags
have been created and successfully demonstrated by Wiliot, which has
secured $50 million in funding from eight major investors, including
the investment arms of Samsung, Qualcomm, and Amazon. Wiliot expects
manufacturers to embed its tag into products and product packaging,
which consumers could interact with, both in stores and at home, to get
additional product information on their phones, or track lost items.
- First-Ever 2020 Toyota Supra Sells for a Whopping $2.1 Million
- That's almost double what the first 2020 Ford Shelby Mustang
GT500 pulled at the same venue, 42 times the 2020 Supra's starting MSRP of $49,990, and
over 17 times more than what that pristine 1994 version sold for on
Bring a Trailer a couple weeks ago. The car is finished in matte gray
with matte black wheels and, to make it really stand out at Cars and
Coffee, gloss red wing mirrors. To continue the racer-boy theme, the
interior is red with carbon fiber inserts.
- Ford Is Developing a Powerful All-Electric F-Series
Truck - FoxNews.com Automotive Editor Gary Gastelu on Ford's
plans to build a fully-electric F-Series pickup truck.
- Most Customers Would Stop Watching Netflix if it had
Commercials - Netflix reportedly tested video ads for other series
earlier this year, and those tests didn't go well. The company has no public plans to
implement video ads anytime soon, and a recent survey conducted by the market research
firm Audience Project seems to justify Netflix's reluctance. After
asserting that Netflix is the leading streaming in the US and several
European countries, the research firm claims that over half of
Netflix's users would stop watching content if the streaming platform
introduced commercials. In the U.S, 42% said they would still stop
watching if a price drop accompanied the commercials.
- Resident Evil Heading to Netflix - According to sources
close to Deadline, a Resident Evil TV
series is in the works for Netflix. Just like the Resident Evil movie
series, it is reportedly under development by Constantin Films. The
movie series is currently getting a reboot of its own, also produced by
the same German company. This time, they are hiring British director
Johanes Roberts to replace Paul W.S. Anderson. Although quite
successful and earning over a billion dollars worldwide, Anderson's
film series are a significant departure from the original CAPCOM video
game series. So fans are naturally hoping that this time around it
would actually resemble the video game closely
- Star Wars Theory Prevails after Disney Claims Copyright on
Vader - Disney and their partner company Warner Chappell had
claimed that because the custom score used in the film used a rendition
of the Imperial March score, then it was in violation of their
copyright policy. They used this copyright to claim that the entire
film was now their intellectual property and were now going to run ads
on it and collect the revenue themselves. Theory was
given the option to appeal it, which he stated he was not going to do
because he would likely lose
and then Disney would delete the film and possibly get his channel
taken down.
- NOMAD SQUADRON - Official Trailer - Fire up your pulse
engines. NOMAD SQUADRON hits the Internet January 2019.
- Spider-Man: Far From Home - Teaser Trailer - Marvel on
Tuesday dropped the first teaser trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home,
the sequel to 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming and the 23rd superhero film
in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. True to its name, the movie will see
Peter Parker (Tom Holland) depart familiar turf on a school trip to
Europe. Any hopes of some much-needed rest and relaxation are quickly
dashed following an encounter with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). We're
also shown glimpses of Mysterio played by Jake Gyllenhaal. Spider-Man:
Far From Home hits theaters on July 5, 2019.
