- EU: Selling Piracy-Configured Media Players is Illegal - The
European Court of Justice has ruled that selling
streaming boxes pre-loaded with software specifically configured to
facilitate access to pirated content is illegal. The case specifically
involved Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN and local online store
Filmspeler.nl, but is expected to have far-reaching repercussions
across the EU for businesses selling piracy-enabled set top boxes.
Filmspeler is one of many services selling Android-based set-top boxes
equipped with software like Kodi. While Kodi is a neutral open-source
platform that isn't ilegal by itself, many add-ons are publicly
available from third parties to deliver pirated sports, TV and movie
streams.
- Google to Let Anyone Build Assistant Into their Hardware - Google
today released an SDK that developers can use to add the
Google Assistant to all manner of different gadgets and devices.
Assistant made its debut in the Allo messaging app, and later arrived
on Pixel smartphones, Google Home, Android Wear smartwatches, and other
hardware. These have the distinction of all being Google-made products.
Thanks to the new SDK, developers, tinkerers, and device makers of all
kinds will be able to bring Google Assistant to their gear, for
example, Smart Mirrors. Google says this initial SDK is a preview and
not everything will work. For example, it is still working to include
features such as hotword support. Developers interested in Assistant
should visit Google's developer web site.
- Samsung to Issue Software Patches for Galaxy S8 - Samsung
today announced
it will push two software updates to its Galaxy S8 smartphone to
resolve issues with screen tint and WiFi connectivity. Some S8 owners
claim their devices have a reddish tint to the screen, while others say
they cannot connect to WiFi networks. Samsung insists there are no
actual defects in the device itself and that the updates are being
distributed "for consumer comfort." The first patch will address the
tint issue, giving consumers "a further enhanced ability to adjust the
color setting to their preference." The second patch targets phones
sold by a specific carrier in South Korea and will be only be issued
there. The Galaxy S8 and S8+ went on sale in the U.S. on April 21 and
in S. Korea a few days before that. Samsung says pre-orders for the
device have been strong, particularly in its home market of Korea. The
company did not share first-weekend sales figures. The phones are the
first high-end devices to ship from Samsung after its failed Note7 last
year, which was recalled due to battery problems.

is a good read on some of the science behind zinc-based batteries, but
what is even more amazing is that they predict to be able to scale up
this technology and have it ready to come to market by the end of 2019.
Not only could rechargeable zinc-based batteries possibly store as much
energy as lithium-ion batteries, they could also be safer, cheaper,
smaller and lighter, new research finds. The results suggest zinc
batteries could find use in mild hybrids (microhybrids), electric
vehicles, electric bicycles, and eventually, perhaps smartphones and
power grid storage.

- Musk said that there are still important challenges to be
overcome for that vision to become a reality. The Boring Company is
working on bringing the overall cost of boring the tunnels down while
increasing the speed. With better materials and more power, Musk
believes that they can increase the speed of the current machines,
which are able to dig about 300 feet per week, to up to 1 mile per
week. That's a 17.6x improvement.

That's a good decision, except I don't agree when it comes to things implemented of top of a platform (see Kodi issue).
It's like saying: You can't sell PCs with Windows installed because Windows can run illegal tools... But so can Linux and anything else...
I wonder what Dell, Asus and other OEMs will have to say when they won't be allowed to ship PCs with Windows... |

No you are the one missing the point. They sell an Android box "pre-configured" with Kodi and a bunch of pirate addons. That is the problem and only the problem. I am pretty sure you can still buy an Android box without KODI on it but it wont be so easy to get all these pirate addons. |
