 TechNews - Core i7 Skylake reaches ~7GHz - tech
(hx) 07:49 PM CEST - Aug,23 2015
  • Core i7 Skylake processor reaches nearly 7GHz - A Hong Kong based professional overclocker by the name of Chi-Kui Lam has set a new record for the Intel Core i7-6700k processor frequency speeds, reaching almost 7GHz clock speeds. In order to reach a speedy 6998.88 MHz was not straightforward, however, as it required the disabling of three of the four cores. In addition, Lam had to utilize the Hyper-Threading technology as well as increase the voltage from 1.2V up to 1.888V. The components of this record-breaking feat include an Asrock Z170 OC Formula mainboard, DDR4 memory as well as a hefty 1300W power supply unit. Since the processor is working overtime, cooling is achieved by utilizing liquid nitrogen. One thing to note however is that while a professional overclocker was able to manage such speeds, it remains questionable as whether retail versions of these chips will be able to manage to hit even 5GHz clockspeeds with high-end cooling systems.

  • Even when told not to, Windows 10 just can't stop talking to MS - Unfortunately for privacy advocates, Windows 10 privacy controls don't appear to be sufficient to completely prevent the operating system from going online and communicating with Microsoft's servers. For example, even with Cortana and searching the Web from the Start menu disabled, opening Start and typing will send a request to www.bing.com to request a file called threshold.appcache which appears to contain some Cortana information, even though Cortana is disabled. The request for this file appears to contain a random machine ID that persists across reboots.
  • Microsoft will now detail only "significant" Windows 10 updates - Microsoft released the third cumulative update to Windows 10 last week. But surprisingly, the supporting document associated with the patch - known as KB3081438 - was devoid of any information pertaining to what the update contained, except that "it includes improvements to enhance the functionality of Windows 10". This surprised many users of the OS, keeping in mind that Microsoft was forthcoming about the fixes in the previous two cumulative patches. The company has now offered an explanation regarding its policy of change logs regarding Windows 10 patches.
  • Microsoft releases Windows Server 2016 Technical Preview 3  - Microsoft has finally released the update to Windows Server, dubbed as Windows Server 2016 Technical Preview 3. Microsoft also published the release notes of Windows Server Technical Preview 3, which includes Windows Server Containers which are an isolated, resource-controlled, and portable operating environment. Furthermore, the update also contains Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) and Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS), which will help organizations provide better identity management experiences on devices as well as configure the latter to improve authentication techniques. Changes have also been made to Hyper-V or Scale-out File Server failover cluster so that it can now easily be upgraded without any downtime. Microsoft has also improved the Windows Server Antimalware , support for OpenGL and OpenCL applications MultiPoint Services has been integrated into Remote Desktop Services for Windows Server Technical Preview. Improvements have also been made to File and Storage Services, Web Application Proxy, Windows PowerShell 5.0 and Networking.
  • Torrent Trackers Ban Windows 10 Over Privacy Concerns - There are those who think Windows 10’s data collection is nothing to fuss about, while others believe there is an extraordinary amount of information being captured by Microsoft for vile purposes. It seems that torrent trackers are falling into the latter party, as some are banning the OS entirely.
  • Apple to Replace Camera On Some iPhone 6 Plus Units - Apple has launched an iSight camera replacement program for the iPhone 6 Plus. According to Apple, in a small percentage of iPhone 6 Plus devices the iSight camera has a component that may fail causing photos to look blurry. The affected units fall into a limited serial number range and were sold primarily between September 2014 and January 2015. Owners of the iPhone 6 Plus who experience blurry photos and purchased the device in the indicated date range can check to see if their camera is eligible for a free replacement. The repair can be completed at any Apple Store or authorized reseller.
  • Google Brings Interactive Watch Faces and Translate to Android Wear - Google has announced an update to its Android Wear platform that makes it possible to interact directly with watch faces. The revised watch face code lets watch faces change their design to reveal new information, such as notifications, or launch a specific app. Google teamed up with a handful of developers, including Bit, Under Armour, and Together, which created the first set of interactive watch faces. Under Armour's watch face, for example, will let users see their step count, calories burned, and distance moved. The updated platform also includes Google Translate. Users can speak to their watch and see words translated into 44 different languages. Wearers can flip the smartwatch to show a friend, who responds in his or her own language. When the watch is flipped back toward the wearer, the response is translated back to the original language. The Android Wear update is being pushed out to Android Wear devices over the next few weeks. At the same time, Google released the necessary API for developers to use to create the new, active watch screens. It will be up to developers to add interactive functions to their watch faces.
  • Samsung Offers Test Drive to iPhone Owners - Samsung has unfurled the "ultimate test drive" in order to tempt iPhone owners to switch to a new Samsung handset. The company is letting iPhone users test drive a Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 Edge+, or Galaxy S6 Edge for 30 days for just $1. Samsung will send a handset and an active SIM card to those who register for the promotion from an iPhone. The rental must be returned at the end of a month and borrowers will be on the hook for any damage incurred during the trial (cracked screens, etc.). People who don't return the handset will be charged the full retail amount. The test drive promotion is only available to U.S. residents.
